An extensive two-month cruise circling the Australian Coast is being halted following the tragic passing of an elderly woman who was left behind by the vessel on a distant island.

The elderly woman had been trekking on Lizard Island with other travelers from the vessel, but separated from the excursion for a rest. The ship departed without her and went back several hours later after the crew realised the woman was not present.

An extensive search operation located her remains the following day.

Authorities are looking into the event, alongside law enforcement and the medical examiner.

The CEO of the shipping company announced that travelers and crew on the Coral Adventurer were notified that the remainder of the cruise had been terminated due to the "sad loss and earlier mechanical issues".

In a statement, he added that guests would be issued a complete reimbursement, and said the organization was working "to organize the travel back of the passengers via chartered flights".

Authorities also published an updated communication, and said they had "delivered a order to the Master" prohibiting any additional guests from getting on the vessel.

The official said that they would visit the ship in the Australian city upon its arrival.

Chronology of Incidents

The liner initially left the Australian port on October 24th, and was just two days into the voyage at the moment of the 80-year-old's demise. Lizard Island was the initial destination on the journey.

Travelers on board - who usually pay tens of thousands of dollars to join the expedition - were transported there for a shore visit with the possibility of hiking or snorkeling.

The offspring of the victim said that her loved ones was "stunned and saddened that the liner left the island after an planned tour without my mum".

Through her comments, she characterized her mum as an "active elderly person" who was a affiliate of a hiking club.

"From the little information we have been told, it appears that there was a failure of care and ordinary reasoning," she stated.

She continued that she hoped the inquiry would be able to determine what "the operator should have performed that might have preserved Mother's existence".

"According to reports from the police that it was a very hot period, and mother became unwell on the mountain ascent," she stated.

"She was asked her to head down, unescorted. Then the vessel departed, seemingly without performing a roll call.

"At a certain moment in that chain of events, or shortly after, mother succumbed, by herself."

Operator Position

Through an announcement, the Chief Executive verified that the operator was "cooperating fully with investigators to assist their inquiry".

He mentioned that the company was "deeply sorry that this has occurred" and had offered its complete assistance to the relatives.

Shipping Sector Practices

The vessel caters for up to 120 guests with forty-six crew, according to company details. It was specifically designed to access isolated areas of Australia's coastline and is outfitted with "small boats" - minor craft used to transport individuals on land visits.

Occurrences like this are rare, and cruise ships have procedures to document which travelers are boarding or leaving, according to travel authorities.

"Going ashore secretly or [back] on the ship just isn't an option," an authority stated.

Shipping companies take these processes with great importance and have "advanced technology in place to prevent such incidents from happening," the authority added.

"This is probably a surprising - and unfortunate - one-off."
