A recent study suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People purchasing such medications must be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.
Analyzing Approaches
The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with other pills.
The team note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the drugs explains the amplified regain.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS advise the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden return of cravings.
"I experienced a switch flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled a patient.
This challenge is worsened if users have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural management.
