As any significant honors show approaches, one notices a clamor to include additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
Another commentator has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent above others. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and it will always start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title got overlooked completely in 2014
- Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
- Popular arranging title got ignored recently
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most engaged experiences worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games for the title of most purchased experience; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Puzzle game makers operate at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait 35 years.
